Cake Decorating | ONE POUND

I tried my first cake decorating class at probably one of the cutest cake shops in Toronto! One Pound located in Midtown Toronto 1960 Yonge St 2nd flr, Toronto, ON M4S 1Z4 is a cute little cake shop that sells delicious cakes with unique designs but also offers decorating classes.

One Pound is a shop I actually frequent for getting cakes for special occasions. Before classes were avaiable, Jun the shop owner and super talented buttercream artist used to make custom cakes . I’ll attach pictures of some of her creations.

I signed up for their Lunch Box cake decorating class online. Spaces for the class is limited so booking was a little challenging. I had to keep up to date with their Instagram for when class dates were opening up and when to start booking on their website. They offer this class only a few days in the week. They have the option of booking individual spots ($58) or couple ones ($73). I had only booked an individual spot initially but contacted them via Instagram if I could add a friend, which they kindly allowed and sent a price adjustment invoice.

Now for the class!!

When we arrived there were 6 seats set up for the class, each with their own turntable and 3 cake pieces (we shared a turntable and cake). Jun and Tim are the shop owners and both super sweet and fun to talk to. Jun started off by showing us how to fill and stack our cake pieces. The filling for this class was blueberry cheesecake! We piped the cheesecake filling on the perimeter and filled the inside with their blueberry compote. After stacking our pieces we went crumb coating - where you seal any crumbs of the cake in a thin layer of buttercream and make it smooth. After this they took our cakes to chill.

Our finished cake!

We then got to practice piping for our cakes. We got tubs of Swiss buttercream to colour with dyes based on what colour we wanted our cake to be and the details we wanted to add. They had a stand full of different piping tips that we could use to create our designs. Jun would show us how to pipe the style we wanted and we each got a clear plate to practice on.

Since my friend Christina and I were sharing a cake we wanted to do a design that was half and half. As Sanrio fans we decided to do a My Melody and Kuromi cake. We wanted to create 3D characters so Jun helped us come up with the best way to create them. We practiced a few times until we were happy with them and they went to get chilled to keep their shape.

We got our cakes back from the fridge and it was now for the hardest part - Masking. This is where we cover our cake with buttercream and spread it out so it is perfectly smooth to decorate on. We tried our best to follow along but got help from both Jun and Tim to get it nice and smooth. Jun then helped us put our little My Melody and Kuromi on our cake and we started decorating what we practiced.

We finished off our cake with some sprinkles and little piping details and our cakes were ready to be packed up to take home! They spent some time in the fridge and that’s when we decided our characters needed noses so we quickly added those. Each cake was packaged into a little lunch box with a candle to take home with it. Tim kindly cut ours in half and Kuromi and My Melody went their separate ways.

All the cakes made this class!

Overall this was a very enjoyable experience! ^_^ I had lots of fun learning about the cake decorating process and getting to try it out myself. Jun and Tim are very kind and helpful and I totally recommend this as a fun experience to do with a friend or a date.

I also have to add that their cakes are also very good. Most of their flavours are light and I really enjoy their Earl Grey and Blueberry Cheesecake flavour! So not only was it a fun experience, I got a yummy cake out of it too (:

If you’re interested in trying this out One Pound also offers different decorating classes such as vintage cake decorating and even a more intricate cake painting class.
